Don’t Ditch The Bras – Donate To a Worthy Cause Instead

Make Space recently worked with a client decluttering and sorting out her wardrobe. After we’d finished, we had the usual bin bags full of charity shop donations, but also had a bag of perfectly good bras which we realised many charity shops sometimes don’t take.

A friend of ours suggested donating them to a specialised bra recycling charity. What a great idea we thought, so we did just that. The client was particularly pleased her outsize and unwanted bras were going to a good cause.

Here’s how you can follow suit and donate your unwanted bras (or unused pants):

Smalls For All

“Smalls for All is a Scottish Charity which collects and distributes underwear to help women and children in Africa. We help those living in orphanages, slums, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and schools, as well as providing underwear to hospitals to help those suffering from medical conditions like obstetric fistula.

While people living in Western Society tend to have easy access to underwear and take it for granted, in many more remote or poorer parts of Africa, that is far from the case. Underwear is a luxury that many people just cannot afford or it isn’t easily available.”

Bras – Against Breast Cancer

“Our bra recycling scheme takes your unwanted or unloved bras and through our network of bra banks raises vital funds for pioneering breast cancer research.

The same bras also help to support small businesses in Africa. Together with our recycling partners, our textile recovery project prevents these bras going into landfill before giving them a new lease of life in developing countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where bras remain too expensive to produce locally.”

Other ways to donate:

  • Find out if your favourite local charity shop recycles bras
  • Take them to your local refuge or homeless charity
  • Some lingerie/department stores and supermarkets run bra recycling schemes so keep an eye out for these.

So next time you have an underwear clear out, instead of throwing out perfectly good bras – donate them instead…
